This is a summarized list of what I think matters most about making an enjoyable cup of coffee.

The Cardinal Rules of Coffee
Rule 1
Never boil coffee. Coffee brewing water should be just below the boiling point (as measured at sea level), that is at 195° F or 90° C).
Rule 2
Never allow already brewed coffee to come into contact with the grounds a second time. Further, do not use coffee grounds to brew more than one time. Fully extract the first time.
Rule 3
Never critique other people's methods for making coffee when you are visiting someone's household. Make it how you like it at home and keep your coffee snobbery to yourself when out and about. Coffee is not just the best beverage ever discovered; it's also a social phenomenon.
Rule 4
Use fresh coffee.
Rule 5
Use freshly ground coffee.
Rule 6
Use fresh, clean water.
Rule 7
Always clean the equipment thoroughly according to the instructions that came with it, if any.
Rule 8
Listen to everything Aaron says on his web site about coffee. It is all thoroughly researched and his opinions are insightful. |
